Lily Allen- L8 CMMR

Lily Allen- L8 CMMR

Lily Allen is absolutely KILLING IT even though its been 8 years since her original hit "Smile". She's back in a big way and I have LITRCHULLY been counting down the days until the 2014-release of her album, Sheezus. Yes, that is a Kanye West reference. Yes, Lily Allen is paying homage to Kanye West in the form of a whole album. And YES, this song was on this week's episode of GIRLS in one of the best scenes of the season. Finally Hannah has self confidence about something else other than her ability to wear no clothes in public!! I love everything about L8 CMMR. The backbeat is catchy-as-fuck and Allen's voice, per usual, is flawless. The chorus is perfect for girls to shout between taking vodka shots during pre-games and the whole song oozes attitude, a staple of Allen's tunes.

Keys n Krates - Follow You Down (Zedd Rework)

Keys n Krates - Follow You Down (Zedd Rework)

This song has a million views on Youtube and came out in 2012, so I guess I'm late to the party.....the trap party that is. There's not a lot to say about this one other than it rocks, and pretty much bears no resemblance to the original Zedd track. Instead, Canadian synth enthusiants Keys n Krates have exploited one line, and looped it over and over on a higher vocal pitch for 4 minutes. It would be exhausting if it wasn't so catchy. The original is also worth checking out, if you haven't heard it (if it's on the radio and I'm dumb, sry. I don't live my life to the soundtrack of the Electric Zoo festival).

Coldplay - Midnight

Coldplay - Midnight

Dear Coldplay,
Beyonce effectively ruined the unannouced music delivery for everyone else. When you do it 3 months after her, you look like losers. And I don't want you to!! Because I like you infinitely better than Beyonce (I hate her and I refuse to apologize). So plz release your music normally. Moving on, have you upped your indie cred or what. Someone's been listening to Bon Iver! I really like that you are not afraid to alienate the 12 year old girls who listened to Paradise on repeat during your Mylo Xyloto (identity crisis) days. So, props for that. However, I am really hoping that you have some more catchy music up your sleeves for further release. Because as much as I admire this sparse "We're Moving to Mars" production, it's kind of umm, boring. So yeah. I will listen to this when I go to bed. But I will listen to it, so consider that a victory.

XOXOOXOX, Tunes 4 Loons

P.s. Chris Martin, is Gwyneth cheating on you or not??!? I must know the truth. Also, were you forced to name your child Moses?

Taches - Hide From You (ft. Jessica Sophie)

Taches - Hide From You

On Facebook, the producer known as Taches says his personal influences are "the sun, birds and not knowing what time it is." Same, Taches. The sun rocks. Perhaps it was a premier influence in the creation of his track "Hide From You," which features vocals from some girl I have never heard of with two first names. She sounds pretty good, as does the music that surrounds her. Lots of drums, distorted vocals, some twinkly sound effects. I read someone describe this as lofty, which seems appropriate. So crank this up, throw out your watch, and picture idk, like some doves groovin to this song. IT'S WHAT TACHES WOULD HAVE WANTED.

Tove Lo - Not On Drugs

Tove Lo - Not On Drugs

The queen of destructive partying is back at it. Yet, this time around she insists she's NOT on drugs. She's just in love yall. AWWWWW. Jk, ew. But, even though I would rather hear Tove Lo sing about how she drunkenly throws up Twinkies in her bathtub ("Habits"), I cannot deny the fact that this song is catchy AF. Her voice sounds great, and "Not On Drugs" has one of those big explosive choruses. While all upcoming pop stars are compared to (usually better) ones ruling the scene, I think she could be as good as Robyn. Blah blah they both share Swedish heritage, but really I am thinking of that innate quirkiness. Or maybe Swedish people are quirky, I don't know any. Tove Lo's EP Truth Serum out March 3rd.

Major Lazer - Come On To Me (ft. Sean Paul)

Major Lazer - Come On To Me (ft. Sean Paul)

OH HAPPY DAY!!! Sean Paul, one of the most important treasures in music today, has made a song with Major Lazer. Even though I have loved shameless chart-topping Sean Paul for many years, I can also get on board with hipster / rave Sean Paul. He is a man of many facets people.. But actually this pairing is pretty amazing. Major Lazer (who is the same person as Diplo!? let's just call this the Illuminati) has set up some crazy reggae production. Think steel drums, horns, and unidentifiable electronic noises. Then incorporate Sean Paul singing "COME ON TO MEEEEEEE." Game over.

Bleachers - I Wanna Get Better

Bleachers - I Wanna Get Better

One of the members of fun is in this band. I can't really tell, but I felt you all should know this fact. This song has a lot of things working against it, (mainly that Taylor Swift tweeted about it****) yet I can't force myself to hate it. If I'm being honest, I want it to be the soundtrack to the train wreck life I currently live (graduating college is gr8 for mental stability). It's angsty, catchy, and filled with guitar and yell-y vocals. Excellent for recreating some 90s vibes. And screaming.

**Sry if you like her, BUT SHE'S CRAZY & U CANNOT DENY IT

Betty Who - Heartbreak Dream

Betty Who - Heartbreak Dream

I think Betty Who is the love child of Katy Perry and MS MR. Before you jizz your pants, I will also add that I don't think her material is as good as either of those betches. BUT the potential!! "Heartbreak Dream" is the first single off her yet to be released debut "Slow Dancing." It's standard fare, but it shows off her basically perf pop voice and some big 80s production. Stay tuned for more development on this wannabe chart topper. Also Betty Who, if you read this, plz change your name, I fucking hate it. I keep saying Betty Boop, and I'm pretty sure you don't want people associating you with ancient cartoons. Or maybe you do. You did voluntarily name yourself Betty.

Skogsra - Now You See Me

Skogsra - Now You See Me

A simple google search revealed to me that "Skogsra" is also the name of a seductive Swedish forest creature. Lol. So while this piece of folklore seems to be driving source of inspiration for these people, truth be told this band is about as seductive as Ryan Lochte trying to spell his name (I know that this is a really dated Olympics joke, but I was inspired by Sochi and I know no winter athletes, sry bout it). It is enjoyable peppy techno music tho, so rejoice. Skogsra/(Seductive Wood Nymph) contains similar vibes to people such as: Electronic Guest, Daft Punk, and other disco bands of the synthesizer time. While this track is a tad long, we should get over that, because so is "I Will Survive" and it's still a banger. Also the lead singer's voice rocks.

Unknown - Superfriends

Unknown - Superfriends

No, Unknown is not the stage name of some hipster fuck secretly hoping to get famous off it (ahem, Lana del Rey, the artist formerly known as Prince). We actually do not know who made this. This producer only calls himself "Z". That's some V for Vendetta shit right there. Moving on to the actual music, there is a reason this was lifted from the vast frontier that is all of Soundcloud. It's SICK. Truly. The hook is sinister, fierce, and complemented by some warped man vocals. You know, like the kind that was always calling people in the movie Scream. Disclosure wish they made this.

SOHN - Artifice

SOHN - Artifice

Does this man ever disappoint? I literally screamed with joy when I saw a new track up, and "Artifice" delivers. I am too overwhelmed with the genius of SOHN to write an articulate post, so I am listing the things I like about it. And also I'm a Millennial and we like to do that shit right? 1. How he splices up his voice like when you were little and did the Ah ah ah ah Indian thing with your mouth (unless I am the only politically incorrect child who did this, in which case, sry). 2. the eerie organ stuff that appears in every song.  3. His angelic voice  4. the lyrics, which are about being denied a soul in modern society or something, and are deep in a way that I am not. SO LISTEN! and luv.

Tourist - I Can't Keep Up (ft. Will Heard)

Tourist - I Can't Keep Up (ft. Will Heard)

This song will feel boring at first. Persevere friends, because it builds from an Enya soundscape into a FULL FLEDGED BANGER. Jk, it doesn't, but it does incorporate a nice British vocalist named Will Heard. To date, he's most famous for an appearance on Klanngkarussel's UK hit "Sun Don't Shine," but if you haven't heard of that rando song, he sounds like Sam Smith. If you haven't heard of Sam Smith aka the man who sings Latch, you should go home. Anyways, Tourist is great, and their pairing provides for a simmery electronic nugget. It's also kind of angsty, which is weirdly refreshing when everyone in the field sings about club love and partying.

Naxxos - New Orleans

2/11/2014 Tunes For Loons 0 Comments

Blah blah obligatory sentence about how sax is soOO trendy right now. This song is as good as Jubel, and is basically its more upbeat cousin. Both utilize female vocals, steady house beats, and yep, the infamous saxophone (the thumbnail was very mysterious I know). "New Orleans" is what house music can be at its very best: celebratory and summery. So listen and imagine that you are hanging on the beach swimming and partyin. Or somewhere else that's your happy place, I don't know u.

Odesza - Sun Models (ft. Madelyn Grant)

Odesza - Sun Models (ft. Madelyn Grant)

PSA: I will never grow tired of the electronic chipmunk song. So if you aren't into that, go listen to Biebz or fucking Tom Ford. I'm sure they will make you very happy. There's not a lot to say about this song. It contains both plesant xylophone sounds and some pitched up vocals. It's short and delightful. I have become convinced that Madelyn Grant is singing "Come wine and dine with ussss," but maybe I am just too mid-week eager to consume alcohol. Listen and let me know plz.

Iggy Azalea - Fancy (ft. Charli XCX)

Iggy Azalea - Fancy (ft. Charli XCX)

Iggy Azalea has always been someone I admired in theory. Essentially, I wanted to like her music because she was soooOO cool (Is this embarassing to admit? whatevr), but ultimately I hated it. With "Fancy", Iggy has changed my mind. First of all, she has chosen to emulate Kendrick with her half-enunciated delivery (ala Gurrrr , I knoo u want dattt dehhhh). I am not hating it. Secondly, the beat on this song is unreal. Simple but fierce. The presence of Charli XCX is also welcome. Her familiar vocal styling works well with rap. Sort of reminds me of Chiddy Bang and Icona Pop's "Manners." Single out April 6th, and hopefully it will be accompanied with a ridiculous video.

Cyril Hahn & Javeon - Breaking

Cyril Hahn & Javeon - Breaking

Not since SOHN and Banks has a producer / singer pairing been so instantly compelling. Cyril Hahn is a Canadian producer most famous to date for his remix of Destiny's Child's classic "Say My Name." This time round he has turned out an original track, and put crooner Javeon's vocal on top of it. Call me crazy but Javeon reminds me of Lionel Ritchie. If Lionel Ritchie took ecstasy and stopped whining about his long lost lady friends. So basically this song is part eerie mid-tempo house beat, and part modern Lionel Ritchie. I think the lyrics are also cool. "Can you hear that I'm breaking?" is an interesting slice of ideasthesia (this is where I brag about my English major). Look out for releases from both artists sometime in 2014.

Tinashe - 2 On (ft. ScHoolBoy Q)

Tinashe - 2 On (ft. ScHoolBoy Q)

I don't know a whole lot about up and comer Tinashe except that she is 20 YEARS OLD. This is shocking mainly because her vocal delivery is hypersexualized ala Cassie "Me & U". It's kind of like when I found out Keke Palmer was 13 singing "Bottoms Up." Dear Keke, I hope the only thing you were tossing back at 13 was Japanese sodas at Hibatchi bday parties. I digress. The point is, despite the youthful age of Tinashe, this song is a worthwhile sultry slow burner. Although I wish ScHoolboy Q could scale back his sexy-talk rap. Idk what you heard ScHoolboy, but "Put that pussy in my mouth" is the opposite of what I want to hear. Also props for the nod to Sean Paul's "We Be Burnin". An excellent tune from an even better artist (if that sounds like sarcasm, it's not. Sean Paul is a Jamaican national treasure.)

The Knocks - The One (ft. Sneaky Sound System)

The Knocks - The One (ft. Sneaky Sound System)

I always felt the Knocks were doing their best stuff when someone else was present. Like, the whole 5 months I've known about them. Brand new track "The One" showcases this theory perfectly, as they make disco / dancey goodness with Aussie people Sneaky Sound System. Their pairing sounds like Chromeo if Chromeo was willing to sell out and make $$$$$$ (and be a little less goddamn indie. ugh.) ANYWAYS, what I'm trying to say is that this song includes delightful disco vocals, dramatic 80s synths, and a catchy 90s Eurotrash beat. There's even a drop at the end for you 21st century listeners! Sorry for this annoying post, the point is press play, and dance like a drunk idiot at 3am on Friday.

EMBRZ - Make Your Way

EMBRZ - Make Your Way

Youtube's Mr. Suicide Sheep (because doesn't that title scream dreamy electro?! #not) posted EMBRZ aka Jack Casey's track "Make Your Way" a couple of months ago, and it fits perfectly in his wheelhouse. A pitched up vocal loop, tinkling piano, and bouncy synths are all present, and work together nicely to create a mAGIcAl soundscape. It's unassuming and pleasant. That pretty much sums it up. Listen and watch the ocean at sunset or something.

Ellie Goulding - Life Round Here (ft. Angel Haze)

Ellie Goulding - Life Round Here (ft. Angel Haze)

Ellie G. is no stranger to covers. In the past few years alone, she has sung tunes by everyone from Rihanna to Active Child. It's no surprise then that she has picked James Blake's work as her next project. "Life Round Here," doesn't get full makeover treatment. The pace and tone are very much the same, although the organ synths have been replaced with  Goulding's own backing vocals and electric percussion. Her voice sounds expectedly eerie, and if adding nothing new, is at least worthy of this track. As for Angel Haze? blehhhhh I can't think of anything bad to say about her rapping, but the Tourette's delivery is wearing a little thin. It kind of ruins the flow of the song if I'm bein honest yall. Her singing is EXCELLENT though. More of that plz.
